This week Balinese people are happy and excited to welcome the Balinese New Year Caka 1941, known as NYEPI DAY on March 7, 2019 with various preparations. One of the important and interesting element prepared is Ogoh-Ogoh. It is a demonic statues made of richly painted bamboo, cloth, and tinsel. It symbolizes negative elements or malevolent spirits or even characters from Hindu mythology, which will be burned after paraded around the village to neutralize the negative spirit. The making of ogoh-ogoh is not only part of the rituals in the celebration of Nyepi, but also becomes a chance for Balinese youth to express their creativity in art. Ogoh-Ogoh will be paraded around the village a day before Nyepi Day, we invite our guests to watch the ogoh-ogoh parade in the village. It will be so interesting to see the Balinese culture and feel the spirit of Nyepi Day together with the locals, So don’t miss it!!

LAUNCH OF THE 2019 SEASON OF BUFFALO RACES

The competition calendar of this picturesque attraction of West Bali has just been published by the authorities of the regency of Jembrana. Called Makepung, the buffalo races take place in the rice fields on a course of about 500 m. Hundreds of pairs of buffaloes are teamed up together with their jockeys who ride the traditional wooden ploughs that are slightly modified for the competition. The Makepung races usually start early mornings at 07:30 with dozens of pairs of buffaloes participating. Another hundred or so take part in the ‘fashion’ parade. The races last for five hours, with the buffaloes divided into three racing divisions. This year they lead up to 3 finals, known as the Governor Cup (14 Jul 2019), the Bupati Cup (22 Sept 2019) and finally the Jembrana Regent’s Cup (17 Nov 2019).
Our guests love participating in these events because it is a rare moment of sharing with the local villagers and farmers. The bath of the buffaloes in the sea after the competition is really something to see. A unique opportunity to take very nice pictures.

Among our beach activities which cover swimming, fishing, snorkeling, diving, kayaking, sailing, SUP, bodyboarding, there is one which is particularly appreciated by our guests: surfing. Why? For 3 main reasons: the West beach of Dajuma is just ideal to learn. The waves are not too strong and the sandy beach is never a problem when you fall down, which is frequent when you start this demanding sport. The second reason is the proximity of a world class surfing spot called Medewi, situated a few minutes from Dajuma. Last but not least reason, is the presence of our surf instructor Jupri who will take care of you throughout the learning process.

“OPEN-BED” NEW PROCEDURE AT DAJUMA

Great start for Dajuma this year with a new procedure aimed at improving the comfort of our guests. Every day, around 6:00 p.m. our housekeeping staff prepares the beds of our guests by adjusting and cleaning sheets and pillows and installing if necessary the mosquito net after having checked the absence of insects inside. At the end, some frangipani flowers are disposed on the bed, bringing their delicate fragrance. A good way to have a revigorating night in a fresh and fragrant atmosphere! The feedbacks from our guests are excellent. On the picture Imam in action.

Last Friday, our guests (Anna and Robert from the Netherlands) had a great experience with the villagers surrounding Dajuma. The Police in Jembrana Regency together with the authorities of Pekutatan sub-district held an event entitled “Planting a Thousand Trees”, to regenerate forests, keep the sustainability of the forests for the next generations and to prevent the disasters (floods, landslides and droughts). It took place in the forest around Pulukan Village. Authorities invited the representatives from all institutions in the whole Pekutatan sub-districts (students, medical personnel, army, villagers from each village in Pekutatan territory) as well as representatives of tourism industry. We invited our guests to join in the event and they were very excited to be involved. After finished the program we walked along the village, Anna and Robert were very happy to see the real life of Balinese village.

A wonderful initiative was taken 2 years ago by 2 young surfers Alex and Andrew who decided to found 4OCEANS. In less than 2 years they have been able to create a fleet of boats and trucks aimed at collecting the rubbish everywhere around the island. Easy to recognise on the beach with their blue clothes, 4OCEANS volunteers do clean the beach between Medewi and Dajuma twice a week, hence completing what our own staff is doing every day. Recently, Dajuma had the great pleasure of hosting a group from Romania. Around the organizers, Ruxandra, Ciprian (www.masterymeditationretreats.com), and Hindu priests from Bali, more than fourty participants initiated themselves to the practice of yoga and meditation according to the 3 principles of Tri Hita Karana, the famous traditional philosophy of Bali: harmony with the Gods, harmony with nature and harmony between humans. A great moment of sharing, very symbolic in this beginning of the year!

With the rainy season, the rivers in Bali are purged of their dead wood which land a few days after on the beaches. This is what happened this week in Dajuma. By chance, a mango tree trunk, long and massive enough, failed on our beach to the delight of the local fishermen who decided to make a new prao of it. Still a lot of work in perspective but time is not really a problem in Bali! Good luck guys!

Very festive atmosphere this December 31st in Dajuma to celebrate the new year! Around a delicious “Babi Guling” (grilled pig) more than 70 guests shared the last hours of the year in a varied musical atmosphere, alternating Jegog, modern songs and traditional dances. On the last strokes of midnight, they exchanged their wishes under the stars while a magnificent fireworks was fired from the beach. All Dajuma staff wishes you a very happy 2019!
