GRACEFUL TEDUNG

17 April 2023/in News

When Bali is discovered  for the first time, we are struck by the wild beauty of the island, its beaches, its rice fields, its volcanoes and its culture. We are also struck by everything the Balinese invent to make their living environment even more beautiful: sumptuous floral decorations, majestic penjors erected at the entrance to villages during the festive periods.
But let’s take a look at the famous “Tedung”, these graceful umbrellas that mark our imagination for life. Where do they come from? Do they have a special meaning? The answer is yes.
All tedung are entirely handmade and require time to manufacture. It is made of bamboo for the structure, cotton fabric and wood for the mast. Close to Dajuma, in Yeh Sumbul Village, there are some craftsmen, who make Tedung for hotel decoration as well as for temple. The round shape of the Tedung is a comprehensive and universal symbol, which is supposed to bring protection and peace. There are 2 types: Tedung Agung and Tedung Robrob. Tedung Agung is usually decorated with colored cloth around its edges while Tedung Robrob is decorated with small balls made of woolen threads around its edges. In general each color of the tedung has a meaning:
– black and white tiles (poleng) symbolizes harmony
– black is for the god Vishnu (who maintains harmony)
– red for the god Brahma (creator of the world)
– white for Shiva (destroying god)
– yellow for glory
But other color combinations exist, for example depending on the caste: the Brahmans use the white tedung, the Ksatriya use the black tedung, the Pasek the yellow and the Pande the red. The color used also depends on the 3 temples of the village: Bale Agung the red, Puseh: the black, Pura Dalem the white.
In any case, it is a wonderful souvenir to bring back from Bali because the tedung exists in several sizes that are easy to carry in a suitcase!

NICE BOTTLE COVERS

20 May 2019/in Dajuma, Eco-Resort, News, West Bali

Since now more than 3 years, we are offering to our guests water fountains where they can refill their glass pitcher free of charge. By doing so, we eliminate most of the plastic bottles which are so difficult to recycle in Bali. The water delivered by these fountains comes from a 40 m deep well and is then purified by ceramic filters. Its purity is regularly controlled by the Quantum laboratory in Denpasar. However, some of our guests still prefer to drink water from plastic bottles and, for them especially, we created with the help of our neighboring craftmen these nice covers made from the bamboo and palm leaves. Hopefully they will one day give up the plastic bottles. This is one of our hope!

AN AMAZING ANNIVERSARY

1 October 2018/in Dajuma, News, People, Restaurant, Wedding, West Bali

Friday night, our guests could hear a nice music in the garden coming from an unusual place close to our Spa. When approaching, they could see an amazing arrangement: the Gazebo entirely decorated for a romantic dinner, closeby, a celebration area also superbly decorated and, between the two, a traditional Rindik orchestra so typical of Bali, composed of 3 players from the surrounding villages.
All this spectacular set-up was arranged by our staff to celebrate the 25th Wedding Anniversary of our guests Mircea & Carmen from Romania. They decided to celebrate it in a little bit unique and different atmosphere in Dajuma. Starting with a blessing wedding ceremony on the beach, then took place the main blessing ceremony, ending up with a romantic dinner accompanied by the traditional Rindik music.
Congratulations dear Carmen and Mircea!

SPECIAL WELCOME DECORATION FOR HONEYMOONERS

18 September 2017/in Bali, Dajuma, News

There is one thing our staff loves above all, it is to create the surprise to our guests by decorating the bedroom on the occasion of specific celebrations such as anniversaries. This is particularly the case for honeymooners who are always amazed, when opening the door of their room, to find on their bed a lot of beautifully arranged flowers creating a very romantic atmosphere where colors and scents enchant their senses. On the picture Agus has just finished one of them. Hopefully our young honeymooners Deborah and Markus from Switzerland will like it!

BEAUTIFUL WOODEN SCULPTURES OF BALI

20 February 2017/in Culture, Dajuma, News, People
Graduated from the Carver’s School of Tabanan, Agus is one of our local suppliers who takes care of all our decorative carvings in the purest Balinese tradition. After having completed the carving of 145 meters above the doors and windows of our Bendega villas last May (see picture below), he is used to come every friday at Dajuma to show to our guests his know-how by carving in front of them. Here on the picture he shows one of his new creation, a mythic bird which will decorate one of our rooms or maybe will be bought by one of our guests. Agus is also the brother of our lovely Padmi, waiter in our restaurants. We love what you are doing Agus!

The tradition of floral decoration in Bali

13 May 2014/in Culture, Dajuma, Nature, News, Tropical garden, Wedding

One of the most fascinating tradition in Bali is the preparation of decorative arrangements, generally made from flowers, bamboo and palm leaves. Everybody in a Balinese family is skilled enough to invent these decorations sometimes very complex. They are used as offerings to the Gods and decoration in the temples and houses.
Dajuma staff does not escape this beautiful tradition. Every day, our staff collects flowers in the garden and prepares nice floral decorations which enchants our guests, especially honeymooners!
Here on the picture, Setha from Germany made this beautiful decoration, trained by Erly our HR Manager.
