This year, Indonesia including Bali, had a longer dry season than usual. In West Bali, where we are located, most of the villagers are farmers. Their fields were dry, some of their crops, mainly rice and vegetables, suffered from the longer dry season. Everybody was expecting the rain to come soon. Finally, it happened in the beginning of November. We saw villagers around us so happy and grateful to be able to celebrate the first rain. This period of the year is also a blessing for our guests: for a few moments of rain mainly during the night, they get in return an even more beautiful nature. In our tropical garden the flowers are blooming like never. The clouds in the sky also create breathtaking sunsets, lasting for much longer than during the dry season. Something you should not miss next time you decide to visit us in the coming weeks!

NEW BUFFALO RACE EVENT

Would you like to live an amazing experience with Dajuma? It is about the famous buffalo races called Mekepung, typical of West Bali. Jembrana and some other areas in Bali try to develop tourism from their village potential attractions. This is what the community do in Manistutu Village (one of the village in West Bali, Jembrana). They decided to promote a new version of Mekepung called Mekepung Lampit, where the race takes place not on a special track made of sand but in the mud, in the rice field exactly. It aims to show that Mekepung was originally inspired by the farmer activity in the rice field. This new event is planned to be held regularly next year.
We already announced the 2019 schedule in our February post. Since then, 2 major competitions took place. The last one will be on November 17th, crowned by the Jembrana Regent’s Cup. Imagine a circular 500 meters circuit in the middle of the rice fields where especially trained buffalos are driven by local farmers riding traditional wooden ploughs just slightly modified. Each event last around 5 hours from the preparation up to the bathing of the buffalos in the sea (or river) after the competition. This is what is shown on the picture where our guests, family Cummings from the USA, shared this rare moment with the local villagers. The next season will start in the middle of July 2020 but in between, there will be some training sessions. Welcome anytime!

Right in front of Dajuma, between two beaches of fine sand, is a volcanic cape. On it, the lava has drawn these “giant cooking pots” where it is good to bask in the sunset. For the local villagers, it’s a way of practicing what the westerners call the “Salut per Aqua” (SPA). As shown on the picture, our customers love to share this activity with them. The volcanic rock, rich in trace elements, combined with sea water and its iodized salt has surprisingly invigorating virtues. An original experience that will not fail to delight you, next time you decide to visit us!

WORLD CLEANUP DAY AT DAJUMA

For the second consecutive year, the World Cleanup Day took place in Bali like everywhere in the world, on September 21st. Born from an Estonian initiative in 2018 and from previous successes of global cleaning efforts, the World Cleanup Day is aimed at combating the global solid waste problem, including the marine debris. In Bali this year, 9 cities held a cleaning activity simultaneously from 7 to 9 o’clock on this date. As shown on the pictures, some of our team did participate to the cleaning of Delod Berawah Beach (near by the buffalo race circuit). It was initiated by the Indonesian national army, government, tourism actors, environmentalists and the civil society, in order to keep Bali green, clean and free from plastic waste. Needless to say that it should not happen once a year, but everyday, as we do in Dajuma!

This year again, we had the pleasure of welcoming at the beginning of September, 3 groups of the famous french chocolatier Valrhona bringing together chocolate masters from the Asia-Pacific region. Aimed at exchanging experiences and recipes and visiting their cacao producers of West Bali, the gathering was also the opportunity to spend some good time at Dajuma and practice some activities such as massages, stand-up paddle and surfing. They also invited the representatives of the cacao farmers to come and taste the delicious chocolate creations made from the West Bali cacao, particularly some chocolate mousses. Everybody was so happy.

Since almost 10 years now, our guests can savour in our Sinta lounge, the delicious teppanyaki cuisine from Japan. The word teppanyaki is derived from teppan (鉄板), which is the metal plate on which it is cooked, and yaki (焼き), which means grilled, broiled, or pan-fried. Imagine up to 6 guests seating together in front of the chef, who cooks various dishes of meat, fish, or both, grilled with vegetables on a hot steel plate forming the center of the dining table. For westerners, this way of dining is unusual, not to say completely new. On the picture our Chef Rudi in action. Don’t forget to try it next time you decide to visit us, you will not be disappointed!

It is something which happens frequently at Dajuma, when our guests are leaving, they like taking a picture with our staff and keeping in touch with us. What is shown this week is a compilation of these pics taken during the month of July. Among them, two dynamic couples Peter and Astrid (top left) and Annette and Marc (bottom left) who are used to visit us regularly. For Peter and Astrid it is twice a year, 26 times in total, an all time high! Thank you, Dear Friends, for sharing the same passion for Dajuma!

MAKEPUNG: THE AMAZING BUFFALO RACES OF WEST BALI

Sunday, July 28th, particularly appreciated by our guests, was the second championship of Makepung (Buffalo Race) of this season (the first was held on July 14th). Makepung races become a tradition for Jembrana, the regency of West Bali. There are some unique facts behind it: 1) Only selected Buffalos which are strong and healthy can participate. They get special training and care by the owner such as special herbs drinks (Jamu). Buffaloes cannot be used to plow ricefields or other activities, 2) Championship or training cannot be held on full moon or new moon, 3) A special ceremony for the buffaloes is held before the championship, 4) The winner is not determined by the participant who reaches the finish line the fastest but by the distance that was successfully made.

SEA ACTIVITIES AT DAJUMA

Because of its unique location straight on the beach, Dajuma offers a variety of sea activities. On top of the list, of course, comes surfing with the famous Medewi spot next door and its long left hand wave. Fishing offshore with the local fishermen is another one particularly apreciated by our guests. Bodyboarding in the waves is very easy to practice and brings a lot of pleasure to everybody from 7 to 77 years old! Stand-up paddle, sailing and kayaking are also 3 ways of discovering the sea in a different way.
On the picture, for their first time in Bali, Ludwig and Vanessa from Germany during their 7 nights stay with us, did some excursions to explore West Bali and decided to try our sea kayak. They enjoyed a lot!
