GALUNGAN & KUNINGAN: A TIME FOR FAMILY GATHERING

21 September 2020/in News

One of the biggest celebration for Hindu people in Bali are Galungan and Kuningan days. They are celebrated every 210 days of Balinese calendar, Galungan being always on Wednesday (Sept 16th) and Kuningan (Sept 26th) on Saturday (10 days after Galungan). It celebrates the victory of Dharma over Adharma (the triumph of good over evil). It marks the time when ancestral spirits of deceased relatives visit the Earth. The last day of the celebration is Kuningan, when they leave earth. The spirits of deceased relatives return to visit their former homes and the Balinese have a responsibility to be hospitable and welcoming to their past ancestors through prayers and offerings throughout their home.

Galungan is also dedicated as a day of Family Gathering, a day after the Galungan most of the Balinese families will visit each other’s house. When they visit their family house, they will enjoy the food that has been prepared such as fruits, cakes and many other things that they already used for their offerings. This time, because of the pandemic and the restrictions of gatherings, the celebrations are different from what they usually are. But the Balinese spirit is anyway there, full of joy and happiness.

HAPPY GALUNGAN & KUNINGAN

22 July 2019/in Bali, Culture, News

Galungan celebration will start in a few days, on July 24th. It happens every 210 days when the ancestral spirits visit the Earth until they return 10 days later for Kuningan on August 3rd. In Dajuma, we are used to celebrate this important event. The most obvious signs of the celebration are these majestuous Penjors which decorate all the villages in Bali. Galungan is also the moment to remember that some people are disadvantaged and need help. This is what we do by donating to the elderly, poor widows, disabled people and orphanage of the surrounding villages some commodities such as rice, sugar, oil, coffee powder, tea.
Happy Galungan & Kuningan!

MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY GALUNGAN

24 December 2018/in Bali, Dajuma, Eco-Resort, News

This year, both events will occur almost together, Galungan being on December 26th. By celebrating the victory of Dharma over Adharma, Galungan marks the time when the ancestral spirits visit the Earth. The last day of the celebration is Kuningan 10 days later, when they return. Galungan also marks the beginning of a new year in the 210-day Balinese calendar.
On the picture, Hendrah, Lely, Dina, Astari and Agus are happy to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy Galungan on behalf of their 44 colleagues!

HAPPY GALUNGAN & KUNIGAN!

5 June 2018/in Bali, Culture, News

On May 30th, Bali celebrated the day of Galungan, which commemorates the triumph of Dharma over Adharma, or good against evil. During 10 days until Kuningan on June 9th, nice bamboo poles called “penjor” decorated with young coconut leaf line the street all over Bali. During this period, a lot of preparation should be done by the Balinese families such as temple decoration, offerings and also an important one which is food. There are some mandatory dishes prepared by each and every family around Bali, for example the famous Tum Bali (chopped meat with Balinese seasoning cooked in banana leaf), Sate Lilit, Lawar (chopped meat mix with chopped vegetable) and Urutan (Traditional Balinese pork sausage). Every day our guests are invited to taste one of these delicious celebration meals in our restaurants. For you, who wants to know about the taste of the delicious Balinese food, we have our Balinese specialities menu in our Rama Restaurant that you can have anytime.

HAPPY GALUNGAN & KUNINGAN!

30 October 2017/in Bali, Culture, News

On November 1st, Bali will celebrate the day of Galungan, which commemorates the triumph of Dharma over Adharma, or good against evil. Second in significance after the Nyepi or Saka New Year, this observance comes twice a Gregorian year, as the Balinese use a 210-day calendar system known as the Pawukon that is the basis for their daily rituals, temple anniversaries and holidays. The festivities will end with Kuningan celebration on November 11th. Bamboo poles decorated with young coconut leaf decorations will line the streets all over Bali. Series of sacred dance performances and rituals, with pilgrims attending from all over the island, will take place on these occasions. A very unique cultural experience not to be missed!
On the picture, our guest Janett from Germany discovers the beauty of these decorations in the traditional market of Negara. Happy Galungan and Kuningan!

Happy Galungan Day

15 February 2016/in Culture, News

Galungan is a great day for Hindus, that comes every six months. During this period one can see these beautiful decorations called Penjor along the roads, everywhere in Bali. Penjor itself means a manifestation of gratitude of Balinese people to God, above all the grace that is given to them and  a characteristic of the Galungan feast.
Further more, Penjor is also the representation of Dragon named Ananthaboga and Basuki. Its shape is similar with dragon. The base point of bamboo is the body of the dragon while the end of the bamboo is similar to the tail of it. Importantly, Ananthaboga is a symbol of soil, while Basuki is a symbol of safety. It is believed that it can provide healing of illness.
Happy Galungan!

Christmas & Galungan

22 December 2014/in Culture, Dajuma, News

This year is particular in Bali as the the celebrations of Galungan and Christmas fall almost at the same time : 17th and 25th.
Perhaps a sign that religions are sometimes converging. In any case it makes sense for Bali to celebrate Christmas as there are a lot of christians around the island.
For the night of Christmas, Dajuma will drive its guests willing to participate in the Christmas mass to the nearby christian church. Then after this moment of praying, they will be offered a delicious dinner (Peking Duck!) with a live orchestra.
Merry Christmas!
