Playing kites or “Melayangan” is a tradition going through generations that is assiduously practiced by Balinese people. It is originated from the habits of farmer’s children who spend their time playing in the rice fields. To get rid of boredom while guarding the fields and livestock, they have fun playing kites. In Bali, there is a mythological story of “Rare Angon” or the god of kites. “Rare Angon” is believed by Hindus to be the incarnation of Lord Shiva who has the image of a child while herding buffaloes in the fields, so the kites traditions also called as Rare Angon Traditions.

Traditional Balinese kites are known for their three forms. First, the Be-bean kite. This kite is shaped like a fish, the word Be in be-bean means fish in Balinese.

Second, is the Pecuk Kite. The shape of this kite is simple. Has four corners that are bent and look like leaves. It is called “Pecuk” because in Balinese, pecuk means to bend.

The last is the Janggan kite. This kite is a sacred kite. The shape is very unique, like a dragon which is believed by Balinese people to be like a guardian of the balance and stability of the earth.

Between July – September, anywhere you see the Bali’s sky will beautifully decorated and various shapes of kites. In front of Dajuma everyday you will see children playing with their kites.

This week, to complete our July 20th post, Dajuma officially received from the Indonesian authorities a certificate of compliance attesting the respect of hygiene rules all around the resort, aimed at protecting our guests and our staff from the covid 19.

The return to normal is now approaching. Being announced by the Governor of Bali for September 11th with the reopening of Bali Airport to international flights, it was essential to reinforce our internal hygiene rules by following all the recommendations of the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation.

As already explained in our July 20th post, they consist in 6 main measures: hands washing with hydroalcoholic gel, face masks, spray of disinfectant on luggages, check of body temperature, health screening form to be filled during check-in and physical distancing.

AN INTERESTING NEW CONCEPT CALLED « NEW NORMAL »

Last week, the Balinese authorities have inaugurated an interesting new concept called « new normal » supposed to succeed to the Corona virus pandemic. It consists of a set of procedures to be applied by all hotels in Bali. It combines both new individual hygiene behaviours with some specific equipment. Among the most important ones are the masks (both face and plexiglass ones), the hydro-alcoholic distributors, the new social greetings, the physical distancing, the body temperature control and a new equipment installed in the parking area consisting in a sink where everybody (guests and staff) entering Dajuma must deeply wash their hands.

At Dajuma, since the beginning in March, we already applied most of these « new normal » procedures ensuring the best protection of the health of our staff and our guests. After 16 weeks of practice and fine-tuning we can now say that we are totally ready for the « new normal », hoping that it will come soon.

This beautiful motto has been once again verified in the field despite the unusual situation generated by the pandemic.

On July 3rd, Dajuma Team (3 people) participated in the Jembrana Clean-Up Day event, which is held by the initiative of Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) (Jembrana) in collaboration with the government, Indonesian Army and Police. This event is regularly held every month in different West Bali tourist attractions, the participants coming from hotels delegations, members of  PHRI, representatives of government, army and police as well as the local society. This event is aimed to be a preparation of welcoming the new normal era which will follow the reopening of tourism sector. It also aims at educating people about the importance of cleanliness and keep the environment away from plastic waste. During this pandemic situation, all these activities are carried out in accordance with the recommended health protocol standard such as wearing mask and keep physical distancing.

Dear Friends of Dajuma,

Thanks to the commitment and dedication of our staff, Dajuma has been able to stay open for the past 3 months by offering a full service to our rare customers from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm.

We were hoping to return to normal in July and forget about this devastating pandemic. Unfortunately, the most optimistic voices are now predicting a return to normal not before the end of the year, the most pessimistic are even talking about 2021.

So far, we have been able to ensure a decent wage for our 48 employees. With their families, a total of 130 people depend economically on Dajuma, not to mention dozens of local suppliers, fishermen, farmers, breeders, workers, tradespeople. Apart from a few bags of rice distributed to the staff, the government has made no provision to help businesses in Bali.

In this context, we urgently need your help.

Whatever the amount of your contribution, it will be credited to your next stay with a 30% bonus and no limit in time.

Failing to have foreign customers staying, flights to Bali not yet being restored, the restaurant team imagined attracting a more local clientele with a menu combining Balinese and international specialties at very attractive prices.
Logically, it should appeal to expatriates living in Bali as well as families from surrounding villages. In any case, this is what we wish. Selamat makan (Enjoy your meal)!

Dajuma was fortunate to receive this week several bags of rice donated by Andrew and Melinda to our staff to help them overcome this difficult period. This young couple has been a client and friend of Dajuma for years. They celebrated their wedding at the hotel in May 2018 and have remained in contact with us since then. This gesture touched us a lot and we don’t have words strong enough to thank them. We will celebrate their return as soon as possible after the pandemic has ended. A million thanks!
