Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, is a sacred tradition observed annually, marking the start of the Hindu New Year. During Nyepi, the island comes to a complete standstill, with no activities, lights, or sounds allowed, allowing for self-reflection and purification. It’s a time for introspection, meditation, and spiritual renewal amidst the serene beauty of Bali. This year’s Nyepi coincides closely with Galungan and Kunigan, a rare alignment that enhances the festive atmosphere. Our esteemed guests, Mr. and Mrs. Prosser, were delighted to immerse themselves in the local culture by visiting a village school. Everywhere they looked, they witnessed the bustling activity of constructing the emblematic Ogoh-Ogoh shown on the picture. These sculptures represent evil spirits or demons and are usually paraded through the streets accompanied by loud noises and chanting to drive away evil forces before the silent day of Nyepi begins. It’s a fascinating and vibrant cultural tradition in Bali. And for our guests, It was a precious moment of communal engagement and cultural exchange, fostering a deep sense of connection and appreciation.

Galungan and Kuningan are two of the most significant Hindu festivals celebrated in Bali. Galungan marks the victory of dharma (good) over adharma (evil) and is celebrated with great fervor. During this ten-day festival, Balinese Hindus visit temples, make offerings, and engage in various cultural activities.
Kuningan, which falls ten days after Galungan, signifies the day when ancestral spirits return to heaven after visiting the earth during Galungan. It’s a time for prayers, offerings, and expressing gratitude to ancestors.

We are delighted to welcome again Mary Bue from the USA (marybue.com), a talented yoga teacher, award-winning musician and retreat guide. She is leading a yoga group at Dajuma, including 14 participants, who embarked on a transformative 7-day retreat. Opening with a ceremony at Baruna Hall on February 23rd, they seamlessly transitioned into their first invigorating class. Welcomed warmly, they immersed themselves in Balinese culture, delighting in traditional dance at a vibrant evening party. Beyond yoga, their journey in Dajuma encompasses exploration of the enchanting landscapes and rich heritage of west Bali. Enjoy a lot the spirit of Bali!

We are often asked the question “how is the rainy season in Bali“? The only possible response is “definitively nice”, as it enhances the island’s natural splendor and  it rains only a few moments in the day, often during the night. But the most amazing, are the sunsets during this season which are nothing short of unforgettable, as shown on the picture taken from the terrace of our Rama restaurant (Photo guaranteed without any treatment). As the sun descends, it paints the sky with hues of orange, red, pink, and gold, casting a breathtaking spectacle upon the horizon.

Last Friday and Saturday (February 2nd – 3rd,2024), our regency held the International Jembrana Bali Chocolate Festival at the Jagatnata Botanical Gardens. Jembrana is renowned for its exceptional cocoa beans. They boasts a unique quality that sets them apart in the world of cocoa production because of their distinct flavor profile, a harmonious blend of fruity and nutty notes, making them highly sought after by chocolate connoisseurs globally. In a groundbreaking move, local authorities initiated a transformative project to designate the regency of Jembrana and its capital city Negara as the ‘City of Chocolate.’ Rather than exporting their prized cacao nibs to various countries, the focus now shifts towards establishing an end-to-end chocolate production process within Jembrana itself. This ambitious initiative aims to add value to their agricultural output by transforming the premium cacao nibs into finished chocolate bars, showcasing the region’s commitment to quality and innovation. An additional layer of collaboration comes in the form of annual workshops held in Dajuma, where cacao bean producers from Jembrana join forces with pastry chefs from across Asia. This collaborative effort is spearheaded by the esteemed French producer VALRHONA, contributing to the exchange of expertise and the elevation of Jembrana’s chocolate production standards on the international stage. Long life to the brand new « City of Chocolate ».
